Ginger Hair Colour


Ginger colour is a balance between, orange and gold (yellow) with a hue of brown colour. The colour can range from a rich auburn, pale blondish red (strawberry blonde), dark copper, fire engine red, flame red, bright orange and so on. It also varies in texture it can be coarse, normal, or fine. Throughout the course of history, people with ginger hair colour are considered to have dashing sex appeal.

Ginger Hair ColourGinger Hair is a genetic mutation. The main gene responsible for this hair colour is melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R). This is found on the sixteenth chromosome. It is generally seen on the heads of just four percent of people. Ginger hair coloured people mostly exists in the U.K, the Republic of Ireland and Australia. The highest percentage of people with natural ginger hair colour is found in Scotland(13%) followed by Ireland(10%).

In the United States, about 2% of the population are ginger heads. People with ginger hair are believed to be the descendants of the Vikings. Throughout the history there has been a prejudice and discrimination against ginger haired people. They were considered as soul less. They have been stereotyped as being fiery, hot tempered and overtly sexual people. They are often being insulted by people by calling names like ‘ginger’, ‘ginga, ginge and carrot tops. Many renowned personalities have ginger hair, for eg, Queen Elizabeth I, Lily Cole, Axl Rose and Nicola Roberts.

Hair shades can change with time as well. It usually darkens over time , However, sun can also bleach it lighter as well. People with ginger hair colour have to be extremely careful in the sun. The red pigment of their hair is a deficient filter to sunlight, and their skin is highly susceptible to sunburn, freckling, skin cancers and wrinkling with age. Doctors recommend that natural ginger haired people should always apply sunscreen whenever they go out in the sun.

Recently many magazines like Tatler, Vogue, and several newspapers have proclaimed that this age is ‘the ginger age’. Many celebrities have also dyed their hair ginger as part of the trend and it is the hottest hair colour around.

  1. Ginger hair color suits well on my hair. Th orange tinge on my hair is just lovely and stunning. I feel the color lasts for a longer period. I really like people with natural ginger hair color.

  2. Recently I colored my hair with ginger shade, it matches just perfectly for my fair complexion. These days, I’m noticing that whenever I go out, guys turn their heads at me. I am so happy now, there was a time when I used to feel inferior thinking that I’m not at all attractive. I just love my new make-over.
